Marie Astier - Textile Artist

"My artworks express personal sensations inspired by nature, rooted in my childhood and my mother’s love for botany. I combine various textile techniques, such as natural dyeing, pleating, embroidery, and felting, sculpting fabrics instinctively, following the shapes and rhythms of nature."

I’m Marie Astier, a fiber artist and textile experimenter originally from France, now settled in Italy since 2006. With a background as a textile engineer specializing in research and development, I eventually chose to step away from the industry to fully embrace the study and practice textile crafts, natural dyeing, and sharing my passion for textiles through teaching.

In 2022, I officially embarked on my artistic journey, blending my technical skills with my deep-rooted passion for nature. I create unique wall artworks and soft sculptures using natural materials, capturing the essence of nature through textures that evoke the rugged beauty of tree barks, the intricate patterns of fungi, the delicate forms of lichens, marine corals, and much more.

My works reflect personal sensations and expressions inspired by nature, yet they reach beyond it, forming a layered artistic journey cultivated over time. This path has deep roots in my childhood, when my mother—a passionate collector of plants, minerals, and botanical treasures—instilled in me a profound sensitivity and deep connection to the natural world.
This legacy has quietly grown alongside my technical and material experiences, building layer upon layer, much like the bark of a tree.

In my practice, I combine various textile techniques, including natural dyeing with plants, pleating, embroidery, and felting. My approach is instinctive, guided by the shapes and rhythms of nature. I sculpt fabrics through my emotions, allowing textures and forms to emerge organically, in harmony with the creative process.
